Treatment of acne vulgaris with light-emitting diodes (LED)
A new modern method of treatment of acne vulgaris with the use of light-emitting diodes (LED) is applied in the Laser Dermatology Clinic. The Omnilux light-emitting diodes technology is used in the treatment of acne, sun-associated skin damage, skin cancer (except for melanoma), and vitiligo as well as for skin rejuvenation.
LED photo-therapy (treatment with light of a certain wavelength) is a real revolution in the treatment of acne vulgaris. The system of Omnilux light-emitting diodes created by Phototherapeutics is applied for the treatment of both mild and severe, even cystic, cases of acne. Treatment with antibiotics, hormones and synthetic retinoids takes a lot of time and improves the skin condition only temporarily: as soon as treatment is suspended, acne reappears in most cases just in a few days or weeks. Besides, pharmaceutical treatment of acne is associated with increasing resistance of bacteria to various antibiotics and, quite often, undesirable manifestation of medication.
What Omnilux LED is and how does it work?
Omnilux photo-therapy is a non-invasive and effective treatment of acne with the use of light. Light therapy acts in complex with the organism’s own protection annihilating acne. Omnilux LED is the source of light comprised of LEDs and emitting light of a certain wavelength. This type of light, which has been the subject of long-term scientific research, is aimed for the annihilation of Propionibacteriun acnes, i.e. the bacteria which cause acne vulgaris.

Propionibacterium acnes produce light-sensitive substances, porphyrins (co-porphyrin III and protoporphyrin). Short-wave blue light emitted by Omnilux perfectly matches the light sensitivity of porphyrins (415 nm). When absorbing this light, porphyrins release free intra-cell oxygen which kills bacteria Propionibacterium acnes themselves. The inflammation process is also mitigated as a result of annihilation of bacteria. After they are killed, red light (a system of LEDs emitting red light with a wavelength of 633 nm), which has anti-inflammatory effect and facilitates the healing of the skin. In this way, the existing acne rash skins over and does not reappear and irritation goes away.
The light emitted by LEDs also reduces the production of sebum and inflammatory cytokines, resulting in the reduction of the amount of sebum produced sebaceous glands down to a normal level, and the irritation disappears. Besides, fibroblasts that are responsible for the production of collagen are simulated improving the colour and tonicity of the skin after the procedures.
ALA photodynamic therapy
In severe cases of acne, local medicines (ALA) are applied to the skin 2 – 3 hours prior to the procedure, thus increasing the susceptibility of the skin to light emitted by the LEDs. Such treatment of acne is called photodynamic therapy. This type of therapy helps to ensure the remission of the disease even in severe, cystic cases of acne vulgaris.
How are procedures conducted?
On the basis of the evaluation of the acne rash, the dermatologist will prepare an individual programme, in accordance with which you will undergo procedures with the use of blue and/or red light every 3-4 days. Clinical tests have established that 8 procedures are necessary for long-term remission of acne vulgaris. The duration of one procedure is 20-30 minutes. The complete light therapy programme for acne lasts 4 weeks. One can return to the usual life order right after the procedure because there will be no visible changes of the skin (except for slight redness of the skin which clears up within a few hours).
How effective the LED treatment of acne is?
According to clinical tests, the scope of acne vulgaris rash decreases, on average, by 81 per cent after a course of 8 procedures. As soon as after the first procedure, you will notice that indications of acne vulgaris decrease and disappear. Blue and red light emitted by LEDs stimulates the immune function of skin; therefore, the curative effect persists for a long time. In order to prevent rash from reappearance as long as possible or to ensure that it has a milder form even if appears, the doctor will prescribe an individual programme to care of your skin.
